Daniel Clowes Seth - Tue., October 18, 7:00pm - Housing Works Bookstore | New York - Voice Places
A Ghost World for teenage boys, graphic novelist Daniel Clowes’s new book, The Death-Ray, explores the tobacco-ignited power fantasies of an orphaned outcast and his annoying best friend. First published in a 2004 issue of Clowes’s awesome Eightball series, The Death-Ray suggests Spider-Man as reimagined by J.D. Salinger and rendered in a colorful and brilliant pastiche of pop art styles. Tonight, Clowes talks comics with Canada’s monomonikered Seth, who has constructed an ambitious meta-comics edifice in The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists (also published by Canada’s righteous Drawn and Quarterly), in which a cartoonist ruminates nostalgically about real and imagined Canuck creators of gag panels, daily strips, nickel-backs, and graphic novels. Perched atop the modern comics pantheon, Clowes and Seth are as hilariously erudite a pair of panel producers as you’ll find anywhere.
Village Voice write-up about tomorrow’s event with Daniel Clowes and Seth, presented with Drawn & Quarterly and Brooklyn’s Desert Island.
