The Best Bronte Books

(according to a Brönte biographer)
  1. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
  2. Jane Eyre
  3. Wuthering Heights
  4. Villette
  5. Agnes Grey
  6. The Professor
  7. Shirley

I’ve never read a Brontë. I know, I know! Is this a good guide as to where to start? Or is it bad to start with the best, because you’re just setting yourself up for inevitable disappointment as you go? Like riding the Magnum first at Cedar Point, then you’re like whatever Blue Streak, you’re boring?

    Villette number one forever.
  2. austinausten said: I’ve only read three on the list, but I would not say Tenant should be on the top. I like Jane Eyre personally, but it seems there’s a split; either you love Jane Eyre more or Wuthering Heights.
  3. checkyourbucket said: Swap the 1 and 3 positions, then go to town.
  4. elibrarian said: Definitely start with either Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights. They’re the easiest to get into, and they gave me a better appreciation for the other books.
  5. bookpilgrim said: JANE EYRE.
  6. ecantwell said: The only one you need to read is Jane Eyre.
  7. improvisatrice said: Eeek. I’d go Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Villette, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Agnes Grey, The Professor, and then Shirley.

  10. sahoward said: I’ve only read Jane Eyre (and I adore it) but THANK YOU for that brilliant Cedar Point metaphor.
  11. dr-gibberyshrooms-md said: I’ve only read #2&3 a long time ago, but I remember that I liked them. Excellent use of Cedar Point by the way. fuck that place is amazing.
